Apple tree planting density is an element of long-term orchard design, where the vigor of the rootstock plays a key role. The use of dwarfing and semi-dwarfing rootstocks allows for a significant increase in the number of trees per hectare compared to vigorous alternatives.

At high planting densities, crown illumination becomes a critical factor, as shading leads to shoot elongation and a reduction in fruit quality. To manage this process, specific crown training systems are employed, such as the slender spindle or the central leader pyramid.

Increasing planting density in intensive orchards accelerates the onset of bearing and boosts productivity per unit area. However, exceeding optimal values for a specific scion-rootstock combination triggers inter-tree competition and the suppression of the orchard.
