The ability of maize hybrids to maintain metabolic stability and continue growth at soil temperatures below +15 °C, which is critical for early development stages.

For maize, the threshold stress temperature is below +15 °C. Cold-tolerant hybrids are capable of germination at +7…+8 °C and vegetation at +12…+15 °C, while susceptible forms require at least +10…+12 °C for germination. However, the crop lacks frost resistance: exposure to temperatures below -3…-4 °C causes tissue death regardless of the cold tolerance level.
The trait is evaluated using the laboratory 'cold test' method, which includes measuring laboratory germination, seedling and seminal root length, and dry matter content. Cold tolerance is an independent hybrid characteristic, unrelated to FAO maturity groups or grain type, and allows for sowing 10–15 days earlier, ensuring accelerated emergence and efficient use of soil moisture.
