The primary manifestation of the disease is the formation of swellings and outgrowths on the roots resulting from hypertrophy and hyperplasia of plant tissues. These pathological formations disrupt the conductivity of the root system, leading to wilting, loss of turgor, leaf yellowing, and general growth inhibition of the crop. As the disease progresses, the outgrowths begin to rot and decompose, releasing the pathogen's spores into the soil.

In rutabaga breeding, no pathotypes of the pathogen specific only to this crop have been identified, and existing systems for race determination are general for the entire Brassicaceae family. Genetic resistance to the disease in agronomic cultivar descriptions is most often designated as relative, with turnip accessions typically serving as donors of resistance, and specific gene loci being mapped in populations of Brassica napus without the identification of markers unique to rutabaga.
