Raspberry spider mite

A complex of pests, including Tetranychus urticae, T. turkestani, and Neotetranychus rubi, that infests leaves and reduces raspberry productivity.

Raspberry plants are damaged by both widespread polyphagous species, such as the two-spotted spider mite and the strawberry spider mite, and the specialized raspberry spider mite. Unlike eriophyid mites, spider mites on raspberries primarily colonize the upper canopy of the plants, preferring areas with low relative humidity.

Initial symptoms of damage appear as small light-colored spots on the upper side of the leaf at the puncture sites. As the population develops, the spots merge, causing a mottled and eventually a bronzed appearance of the leaves. A fine web forms on the underside of the leaf blades and between the shoots.

Severe infestation leads to leaf curling and premature leaf drop, which negatively affects flower bud initiation, crop quality, and the formation of replacement shoots for the following season. Genes for specific resistance to this pest in raspberries have not yet been described.
