Cultivation
Citrus x limon (L.) Osbeck
The technology of growing lemons in a limited volume of substrate, where the physiology of the tree is managed through control of the root environment, nutrient regime, and temperature balance.
In the reference 17 varieties crop Lemon, where this is mentioned in the description.
Growing a lemon in a container limits the volume of the root system, which alters the plant's hormonal balance and stimulates increased cytokinin production. This promotes earlier and more active flowering, as well as fruit set in young trees compared to specimens grown in open soil.
Container cultivation of lemons requires strict control over vegetation, as the lack of soil buffering makes the plant sensitive to any disruptions in irrigation or nutrient regimes. To maintain reproductive functions while limiting growth to 1.5–2 meters, regular formative pruning is mandatory.
An important feature is the necessity of cyclical repotting every 2–3 years to replace the substrate and prevent growth stagnation due to root binding. Furthermore, to prevent plant exhaustion under insufficient light conditions, it is necessary to simulate a winter dormant period at temperatures of 8–14 °C.
