Forage value of rapeseed

Rapeseed is a high-energy forage crop rich in balanced protein and mineral elements. Its use in diets is limited by biological factors—the content of erucic acid and glucosinolates, which are neutralized in bred "00-type" varieties.

In livestock farming, rapeseed is used as green forage for grazing and silage production, as well as a concentrated feed in the form of oilcake and meal. The amino acid composition of rapeseed protein approaches that of soybean, while exceeding it in methionine, cystine, calcium, and phosphorus content. A distinctive feature of the crop is its ability to regrow rapidly after mowing, which allows for increased overall crop productivity.

The use of rapeseed for silage requires the addition of 20–40% straw to the wilted biomass to improve fermentation processes and increase fiber digestibility. The use of "00-type" varieties, which are free of erucic acid and low in glucosinolates, allows rapeseed-derived products to be included in animal diets without the risk of negative effects from antinutritional substances.
