Diseases
Trifolium subterraneum L.
A complex disease of subterranean clover caused by soil-borne oomycetes and fungi. It manifests as seedling death, root system suppression, and patchy thinning of crops.
In the reference 10 varieties crop Subterranean clover, where this is mentioned in the description.
The causative agents of the disease are a complex of pathogens including Phytophthora clandestina, Aphanomyces trifolii, Pythium irregulare, Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium avenaceum, and Cylindrocarpon didymum. Synergistic associations between these species are frequently observed, significantly exacerbating the severity of the infection. For P. clandestina, the presence of intraspecific races, including race 001, has been confirmed, which complicates breeding for resistance.
Key symptoms include pre- and post-emergence damping-off, necrosis of lateral roots, and damage to the taproot. Externally, this manifests as stunting, root discoloration due to hyphal penetration into vascular bundles, and sudden plant death, especially during the autumn-winter period. Manifestations of the disease often require a comprehensive assessment of "field tolerance," as the involvement of multiple pathogens renders monogenic resistance in cultivars insufficient.
