Tomato Leaf Curl

Solanum lycopersicum L.

A viral disease of tomato caused by a complex of Begomovirus species, primarily the Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci.

The disease is characterized by systemic symptoms: plants exhibit stunted growth, dwarfism, shortened internodes, and a bushy appearance. Young leaves curl upwards at the margins and become chlorotic; flowering is often interrupted by flower drop, and developing fruit remain small and deformed.

In tomato breeding, resistance genes introgressed from Solanum chilense and designated with the Ty- prefix are used to protect against TYLCV. Six major loci have been identified: Ty-1, Ty-2, Ty-3, Ty-4, ty-5, and Ty-6. Resistant hybrids often combine several genes to increase the efficacy of protection against genetically variable viral strains.
