Garlic bulb

The main economically valuable organ of garlic, evaluated by weight, diameter, number and arrangement of cloves, as well as the shape index to determine varietal qualities and productivity.

To evaluate a garlic bulb, a complex of morphometric parameters is used: weight in grams, maximum transverse diameter in millimeters, and the shape index, calculated as the ratio of height to diameter. Based on the number of cloves, varieties are classified into low-clove, having up to 10 pieces, and multi-clove, containing more than 10 pieces in a single bulb. The type of branching and the pattern of clove arrangement are also taken into account.

These indicators directly determine the productivity and seed value of the crop, with a positive correlation observed between bulb weight and marketable yield. Varieties with a complex type of branching provide a high reproduction coefficient, but are prone to a decrease in the average weight of an individual clove. When assessing storability, critical factors include bulb density, the condition of the outer scales, and neck length, which for bolting forms is standardized to 20 millimeters.
