Monilia brown rot of sweet cherry

Prunus avium (L.) L.

A fungal disease of sweet cherry that manifests as blossom wilt in the spring and fruit rot during the ripening period. It is caused by the ascomycetes Monilinia cinerea and Monilinia fructigena.

Blossom wilt develops in the spring when the infection enters through the flowers. Affected blossoms, ovaries, and young leaves turn brown and wither, remaining on the branches. The pathogen penetrates the wood, causing shoot dieback, bark cracking, and profuse gummosis.

Fruit rot appears in the summer on ripening berries as brown spots that cover the entire fruit. The pulp softens, and grayish-yellow cushions of conidial sporulation form on the surface. Mummified fruits often remain hanging on the tree, becoming a source of infection.
