Powdery Mildew of Bigleaf Hydrangea

Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser.

A fungal disease of Hydrangea macrophylla caused by the obligate biotrophs Golovinomyces orontii and Oidium hortensiae. It manifests as a white coating on leaves and shoots, leading to tissue deformation, leaf reddening, and reduced winter hardiness.

The primary causal agents of the disease are the fungi Golovinomyces orontii and Oidium hortensiae. The pathogen infects leaf blades, young shoots, as well as pedicels and flowers. The initial stage is characterized by the appearance of small white spots, which eventually expand, covering significant areas of the plant organs.

Affected tissues often undergo deformation and discoloration, including the appearance of purple-brown spots or yellowing. Severe infection development leads to curling and premature leaf drop, which significantly reduces the ornamental qualities and vitality of the crop.

Breeding for resistance is difficult due to the high susceptibility of most commercial cultivars, such as Nikko Blue or Nigra. At the same time, the cultivar Veitchii demonstrates relative tolerance to the pathogen, and modern research is aimed at finding molecular markers of resistance through transcriptome analysis.
