A fungal disease of lettuce caused by the pathogens Golovinomyces cichoracearum and Golovinomyces bolayi. It manifests as a white coating on leaves and stems, causing chlorosis, deformation, and tissue necrosis.

The disease is caused by fungi of the Erysiphaceae family, predominantly Golovinomyces cichoracearum and Golovinomyces bolayi. The disease is characterized by the appearance of white powdery mycelium on leaf surfaces and stems. As the infection develops, the affected tissues yellow and curl, and as the disease progresses, they turn brown and die.

Pathogen development is favored by greenhouse conditions, including high humidity, insufficient ventilation, and dense planting. Unlike downy mildew, there is no widely accepted race classification system or standardized gene designation for resistance breeding for lettuce powdery mildew. Commercial lettuce varieties are predominantly susceptible, and sources of resistance have been identified primarily in wild species Lactuca saligna and Lactuca virosa.
