The bulk density of grain is not a standardized quality indicator or a tool for commercial classification for spelt due to its hulled nature and the lack of regulatory standards.

Spelt is a hulled crop, in which the grain is protected by strong glumes that account for up to 30% of the spikelet mass. Given these anatomical features, determining bulk density as the mass of one liter of grain is technically difficult and does not reflect the actual technological properties of the endosperm.
This indicator is not included in the list of mandatory standards for spelt, as the measurement result depends on the packing density of the spikelets and the proportion of husks rather than the grain plumpness. In breeding and production practice, other parameters are used to assess crop quality, such as dehusked grain yield, 1000-grain weight, and protein and gluten content.
