Pests
Avena sativa L.
The main pest of oats is Heterodera avenae, which causes growth suppression and characteristic 'fraying' of the root system. Depending on the region, the pathogen is represented by the aggressive pathotype C or the less active pathotype A.
In the reference 20 varieties crop Oat, where this is mentioned in the description.
The causative agent of the disease is the nematode Heterodera avenae, and the species complex also includes Heterodera filipjevi. In Russia, the aggressive pathotype C is considered the most dangerous, being widespread in Western Siberia, the Ural region, the Middle Volga region, and the Central Black Earth Region, whereas pathotype A is more common in the North-West.
The infestation manifests in patches where plants become stunted, tiller poorly, and show signs of leaf chlorosis. The root system takes on a 'bearded' appearance due to excessive branching, and from June onwards, small lemon-shaped cysts—the bodies of female parasites—can be observed on the roots. Genetic resistance of oat varieties to this pest is often considered a qualitative trait in breeding without identifying specific loci.
