The seeding rate of Italian ryegrass is determined by the ploidy of the variety, the type of sowing, and the intended use of the sward. Tetraploid forms require higher seed rates by weight due to their larger seed size.

When establishing pure stands of Italian ryegrass, the seeding rate varies from 16–18 kg/ha to 40–50 kg/ha depending on the ploidy of the variety and regional standards. Tetraploid varieties are characterized by larger seeds; therefore, to achieve optimal stand density, they must be sown at higher rates than diploid forms.
In mixtures with legume components, the seeding rate of ryegrass is reduced to 8–10 kg/ha. Given the high germination energy and the growth rate of the crop, the proportion of seeds in the mixture is regulated to prevent the suppression of less aggressive components. The sowing density must balance the need to realize tillering potential with the risk of lodging under intensive nitrogen fertilization.
