Lettuce has a shallow root system concentrated in the upper horizon, which determines the need for frequent, light irrigation. When growing heading varieties, the irrigation intensity is reduced 2–3 weeks before harvest to ensure the formation of a firm head.

Due to the plant's high susceptibility to fungal diseases under excessive moisture conditions, drip irrigation is preferred as it delivers water directly to the roots. In hydroponic systems, controlling the pH in the range of 5.5–6.4 and maintaining optimal electrical conductivity of the solution is critical.

Excessive salinity in irrigation water negatively affects the biometric parameters of the crop. A mandatory requirement for soil cultivation is thorough land leveling, as water stagnation and poor drainage trigger the development of rot.
