Irrigation is a tool for managing soil water, nutrient, and thermal regimes, allowing to offset precipitation deficits and increase crop yields. Varieties for these conditions must possess high yield potential and the ability to effectively utilize intensive agronomic practices.

Irrigation in agriculture consists of a complex of measures for managing soil water, nutrient, and thermal regimes to ensure stable yields regardless of weather conditions. This method allows for increasing crop productivity several-fold compared to dryland farming and regulating end-product quality indicators, such as protein or oil content.

The choice of a variety for irrigated conditions depends on its ability to respond intensively to high levels of mineral nutrition and moisture availability. Such plants are bred with consideration for high resource supply; however, their productivity directly depends on the quality of agronomic practices and the efficiency of nutrient uptake from increased fertilizer doses, often applied via fertigation systems.

Evaluation of varieties for irrigation is based on their responsiveness to intensive management, suitability for mechanized harvesting, and adaptability to potential water stress. A crucial factor is multi-disease resistance, as increased humidity in the air and soil in irrigated fields creates a favorable microclimate for the development of various pathogens.
