Fagopyrum esculentum Moench
Shattering in buckwheat is an agro-biological trait manifested by the detachment of fruits from pedicels, which directly depends on the uneven ripening of the crop and determines the choice of harvesting technology.
In the reference 10 varieties crop Buckwheat, where this is mentioned in the description.
Buckwheat is characterized by prolonged ripening, where flowers, green fruits, and ripe fruits are present on the same plant simultaneously. The propensity for shattering forces growers to begin harvesting before full seed maturity is reached, typically targeting the stage when approximately 90% of the fruits have turned brown. To minimize losses in varieties with high shattering, it is preferable to use a two-stage harvesting method with preliminary swathing.
The evaluation of resistance to this trait is comparative in nature: breeders assess samples under field conditions by intentionally delaying harvest. It has been found that tetraploid forms of buckwheat often demonstrate greater resistance than diploid ones, while varieties with very large seeds are, conversely, more prone to shattering. This trait is genetically linked to a number of morphological features, including homostyly.
