Cultivation of stalk celery in the open field requires a transplanting method with a growing season of 140–180 days, consistent irrigation, and a specific blanching technique for the stalks via hilling or shading.

Optimal temperature conditions are 15–20 °C; high temperatures and lack of moisture make the stalks coarse, fibrous, and bitter. To obtain high-quality marketable produce, hilling to a height of 10–15 cm is applied in the second half of summer, which prevents photosynthesis in the stalks and improves their flavor.
