Fusarium Wilt of Celery

Apium graveolens L. var. dulce (Mill.) Pers.

Fusarium wilt of celery is caused by the specialized soil-borne pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. apii. The disease affects the vascular system, causing yellowing, stunting, and plant death.

In the reference 25 varieties crop Celery, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogen, the fungus F. oxysporum f. sp. apii, is represented by four pathogenic races, among which race 4 is considered the most aggressive at soil temperatures above 21°C. Symptoms appear as yellowing of the foliage, stunted growth, and characteristic orange-brown discoloration of the vascular tissues in the roots, crown, and stems.

Breeding for resistance is challenging due to the narrow genetic base of the crop. There are currently no standardized alphanumeric designations for resistance genes, so breeders use resistant germplasm sources, such as the UC1 line, or incorporate celeriac into hybridization programs. Current research is focused on identifying SNP markers to select resistant genotypes.
