Solanum torvum is used as a vigorous rootstock for solanaceous vegetables due to its high resistance to soil-borne pathogens and nematodes. In vegetable production, only seedling grafting is utilized, whereas budding is not practiced for this crop.

Solanum torvum is used as a specialized rootstock for eggplant, tomato, and pepper, providing the scion with high growth vigor and stress tolerance to excess moisture. The biological compatibility of this species with cultivated Solanaceae allows for a high success rate when using cleft grafting or splice grafting methods at early stages of development.

Unlike woody crops, budding is not used for Solanum torvum. The main challenges when working with this rootstock are the presence of spines on the stems, which require careful handling, and the need to ensure that the vigorous growth of the perennial rootstock does not suppress the development of the scion. The effectiveness of the graft union can vary depending on the chosen scion cultivar.
