Verticillium wilt — Solanum torvum Sw.

Solanum torvum Sw.

Verticillium wilt of Solanum torvum is caused by the pathogen Verticillium dahliae. The species possesses high natural resistance, manifesting as the ability to maintain viability with minimal symptoms of infection, which is why it is used as a rootstock for eggplant.

In the reference 8 varieties crop Turkey berry, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agent of the disease is the soil-borne fungal pathogen Verticillium dahliae, which affects the vascular system of Solanum torvum. Unlike susceptible crops, Solanum torvum exhibits high tolerance: even in the presence of infection, the plant maintains root system viability and the ability to form new leaves, showing only growth retardation or mild chlorosis.

The species' resistance is not associated with classical genes but is due to a complex regulatory mechanism. The defense response is ensured by the activity of specific transcription factors StoWRKY6, StoMYB41, and StoERF109, as well as the participation of the enzyme StoAOS1 in jasmonic acid biosynthesis and the activity of the StoNPR1 gene, which regulates the immune response to the pathogen.
