Spinach leaf spots

Spinacia oleracea L.

A group of fungal diseases of spinach manifesting as local necrosis on leaf blades, caused by various pathogens, including Stemphylium, Cladosporium, Colletotrichum, and Cercospora.

In the reference 28 varieties crop Spinach, where this is mentioned in the description.

Stemphylium leaf spot, caused by Stemphylium vesicarium and Stemphylium beticola, appears as brown spots with a watery greenish border, upon which a dark coating eventually develops. Cladosporiosis, caused by Cladosporium variabile, is characterized by small, round, light-colored spots that become covered in the center with an olive-brown velvety sporulation.

Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum spinaciae, leads to the formation of watery spots that later become dry and fall out, creating a shot-hole effect. Cercospora leaf spot, associated with the pathogen Cercospora beticola, is diagnosed by round spots with a light center, a reddish border, and black dots representing the fungal stroma.

No generally accepted races or pathotypes have been identified for spinach leaf spot pathogens. Resistance to these diseases is a polygenic trait controlled by multiple genes, which is confirmed by the presence of specific SNP markers associated with resistance to Stemphylium leaf spot.
