Remontancy

Remontancy is a plant's ability to set flower buds and produce fruit multiple times within a single growing season. This trait allows for multiple-wave harvesting over an extended period.

Mentioned in descriptions 3 040 varieties reference book.

Remontancy manifests as a crop's ability to repeatedly form yields throughout the season, ensuring an extended fruiting period from early summer until frost. In a number of plants, such as primocane-fruiting raspberries, the process can involve both annual and biennial canes, although utilizing both types often leads to a decline in product quality. Due to continuous productivity, such plants require intensive cultivation practices, including frequent fertilization and regular irrigation, while plantations often have a short operational lifespan and require frequent renewal.

During variety testing, remontancy is evaluated as an important economic and biological trait through phenological observations of flowering and fruiting dates, as well as through the study of yield dynamics. Variety testers compare samples with standards based on total seasonal yield and check the stability of the trait during propagation, as well as its uniformity within the variety. Quantitatively, the trait is expressed as the weight of the harvest per unit area or per plant during various harvesting phases.

The level of remontancy does not have a universal scale and is a varietal characteristic. High remontancy implies nearly continuous fruiting with minimal pauses or the formation of a significant second crop. Low remontancy is characterized by a weakly expressed second wave or the production of a negligible volume of produce that has no industrial significance, while the success of cultivation depends directly on the agronomist's ability to provide intensive nutrition and water supply to the plant.
