Rhynchosporium Scald of Rye

A fungal disease of rye caused by Rhynchosporium secalis (or Rhynchosporium commune), manifesting as lens-shaped leaf spots without a distinct dark margin.

The causal agent of rye scald is the fungus Rhynchosporium secalis (Oudem.) J.J. Davis, although modern molecular studies associate the pathogen with the species Rhynchosporium commune. The disease affects leaf blades and sheaths, where characteristic oval or elongated spots develop.

Unlike barley scald, the spots on rye are often surrounded by a faint or straw-colored margin. The infection is typically uniform throughout the field, and a whitish conidial sporulation forms on the underside of the leaf at the lesion sites, eventually leading to premature leaf desiccation.

Despite the high intraspecific variability of the pathogen, a clear classification of fungal races for rye has not been developed, and information on specific resistance genes is virtually absent in scientific literature. Variety evaluation is primarily conducted through field phytopathological screening.
