Dwarf rust is caused by the fungus Puccinia hordei and manifests on leaves as small, light-yellow pustules with the formation of "green islands." Stem rust (pathogen Puccinia graminis) affects stems and leaf sheaths with rusty-brown oblong pustules that merge into lines, while yellow rust (pathogen Puccinia striiformis) forms lemon-yellow groups of pustules in the form of dashed lines.
Barley rust pathogens are characterized by high population variability and the emergence of new virulent pathotypes. To protect barley from dwarf rust, Rph resistance genes are used, of which more than 25 have been identified to date (from Rph1 to Rph27), with their effectiveness varying depending on the regional composition of the fungal population.
