Spelt rust

Triticum aestivum L. subsp. spelta (L.) Thell.

Spelt is affected by leaf rust, stripe rust, and stem rust, caused by specialized forms of the pathogens Puccinia triticina, Puccinia striiformis, and Puccinia graminis. Genetic protection of the crop is provided by Lr, Yr, and Sr resistance genes, which are analogous to those found in bread wheat.

In the reference 33 varieties crop Spelt, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogens responsible for the disease are Puccinia triticina, which infects the leaves; Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, which manifests as linear pustules; and Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici, which damages stems and leaf sheaths. Symptoms on spelt include the appearance of orange-brown uredinia in the case of leaf rust, lemon-yellow stripes in stripe rust, and large elongated pustules on the stems in the stem rust form of the disease.

Resistance of spelt varieties to rust is determined by genetic factors classified according to the nomenclature for wheat Lr, Yr, and Sr. In spelt genotypes, specific genes have been identified, such as Lr71 in the Altgold Rotkorn variety, Yr5 in European and Iranian accessions, and the Sr9e gene, which provides protection against stem rust.
