Self-fertility in plums

Prunus domestica L.

The ability of Prunus domestica cultivars to set fruit when pollinated with their own pollen, which is critical for crop stability under adverse weather conditions.

In the reference 358 varieties crop European plum, where this is mentioned in the description.

To evaluate the self-fertility of plums, the artificial self-pollination method is used, in which flowers are isolated from insects using gauze bags. The indicator is measured as a percentage, representing the ratio of the number of fruit set to the number of isolated flowers, with at least 100 flowers accounted for per replicate.

Prunus domestica cultivars are classified into self-fertile, partially self-fertile, and self-sterile. In self-fertile cultivars, the proportion of fruit set is approximately 30–50%; however, even in these cases, cross-pollination contributes to an increase in total yield, especially in years with unfavorable weather conditions that limit insect flight.
