Grey mold of raspberry

Rubus idaeus L.

A fungal disease of raspberry caused by Botrytis cinerea, affecting all aerial plant organs with the formation of a characteristic grey mold on the fruits. The infection is often latent, manifesting on the berries only during ripening or after harvest.

The causal agent of the disease is the necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea Pers., whose teleomorph stage is known as Botryotinia fuckeliana. The fungus population on raspberry exhibits high ecological plasticity, and specific races or pathotypes within this species have not been identified.

Critical damage affects the fruits, where watery brown spots develop, progressing into an abundant grey sporulating mold. Flower buds may wither, and in severe cases, the infection affects internodes and shoots, leading to their death.

Specific resistance genes to the pathogen in raspberry have not been described. Breeding for resistance is based on morphological traits, such as trichome density and the presence of glandular hairs, as well as the biochemical composition of the epicuticular layer, which contains antimicrobial compounds including ethyl gallate and various fatty acids.
