Plum Pox (Sharka)

Plum pox virus

Plum pox (Sharka) is an incurable quarantine viral disease of stone fruit crops, leading to crop loss and fruit degradation. The disease manifests as chlorotic spots on leaves, necrosis on fruits, and premature fruit drop.

Mentioned in descriptions 1 410 varieties reference book.

Symptoms of the disease become noticeable 3–4 weeks after flowering. Characteristic chlorotic spots, rings, or arcs appear on the leaves, which are clearly visible when backlit. Sunken spots and streaks form on the fruits, often accompanied by tissue necrosis, flesh hardening, gum exudation, and loss of flavor, rendering the produce unsuitable for sale.

Virus development depends on the activity of vectors, which are aphids, and environmental conditions: at temperatures above +20…+25°C, symptoms on the leaves are often masked, complicating visual diagnosis. The virus affects a wide range of species of the genus Prunus and is spread primarily through infected planting material, causing crop losses from 10% to 100%.

Evaluation of variety resistance during trials is based on screening under artificial infection conditions and the use of ELISA and PCR methods. In breeding, a distinction is made between resistance, as the ability to withstand infection or limit virus development, and tolerance, which allows a variety to maintain productivity when infected without showing pronounced signs of damage on the fruits.
