During variety testing of creeping bentgrass, vigor is determined visually on a 9-point scale characterizing the intensity of initial plant development or the regrowth rate of the turf. Quantitatively, the trait is assessed through the rate of sod formation, turf height increment during the interval between mowings, and tillering capacity, expressed as the number of shoots per unit area.
High vigor at the initial stage of the bentgrass lifecycle allows for faster establishment of a stable turf and reduces competition from weeds. During maintenance, the intensive development of stolons ensures rapid self-repair of the sod following damage; however, it requires more frequent mowing and regular aeration of the area.
