Cultivation

Pea Silage and Haylage

Pisum sativum L.

Peas are a difficult-to-ensile protein crop that requires cultivation in mixed stands with cereals to optimize composition and facilitate harvesting. The preservation process is challenging due to low sugar content, necessitating mandatory wilting or the use of biological additives.

In the reference 24 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

When harvesting peas for silage and haylage, the standard practice is to use mixed crops with oats, barley, or wheat. The cereal component provides the necessary carbohydrate balance for high-quality fermentation, increases stand resistance to lodging, and simplifies mechanized harvesting.

Due to low sugar levels, peas are prone to butyric acid fermentation; therefore, haylage production with wilting of the mass to a moisture content of 45–55% is the preferred method. To control the pH level to optimal values of 3.8–3.9, biological preservatives are applied during harvesting.

The optimal stage for harvesting is considered the beginning of pod filling. Although earlier developmental stages provide higher crude protein and metabolizable energy content, they impose extremely high requirements for strict adherence to the preservation technological process.
