An inflorescence is the organ where flowers, and subsequently fruits and seeds, are formed. In agronomy, the inflorescence type, the number of flowers within it, as well as its compactness and positioning, are key traits determining a plant's potential productivity and its suitability for mechanical harvesting.
During official variety trials, the inflorescence is assessed using morphometric and visual examination methods to determine compliance with DUS criteria. Parameters are recorded as numerical values of axis length, number of flowers, branches or fruits, or by using a scoring scale reflecting compactness and other significant characteristics.
Inflorescence indices depend on both the variety's genetics and environmental conditions, including agronomic practices and weather conditions during the differentiation of the primordial inflorescence.
