Gladiolus Cut-Flower Suitability

Gladiolus L.

An agronomic and biological characteristic of a cultivar that determines the balance between the ornamental properties of the inflorescence and the plant's ability to develop a full-fledged replacement corm after the removal of a portion of the flower spike.

In the reference 149 varieties crop Gladiolus, where this is mentioned in the description.

A critical condition for gladiolus cut-flower suitability is the preservation of at least four true leaves on the plant. The foliage is essential for photosynthesis and the maturation of the replacement corm; therefore, harvesting is performed either by the longitudinal spike puncture method or by low cutting, with due consideration for the plant's developmental physiology.

The optimal stage for harvesting is when the lower bud shows color, which ensures the preservation of the inflorescence and its transportability. For cultivars with heavily ruffled petals, harvesting is permitted when the 2–3 lowest flowers have opened. Variety trials assess the gladiolus's ability to open buds up to the last one over a period of 10–15 days, as well as spike strength and morphological parameters, such as the number of buds (at least 20) and the number of simultaneously opened flowers.

Cut-flower suitability is assessed as an integrated indicator that reflects the cultivar's tolerance to spike removal without negatively impacting the quality of future planting material.
