Dry matter represents the mass of all proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and mineral components of a plant after the removal of moisture. For an agronomist, this parameter is a fundamental characteristic that determines the feed value of a crop, harvest timing, and the subsequent keeping quality of the yield.
Dry matter content strongly depends on the type of crop, its growth stage, and physiological state. The indicator is measured as a percentage of the total mass and serves as an important marker when evaluating the resistance of varieties to abiotic stresses, such as drought or frost.
In variety trials, dry matter is used to standardize yield data, allowing for an objective comparison of varieties without distortions caused by differences in tissue hydration.
