Vegetation period — hulless oats

The duration of the vegetation period varies depending on the genetic characteristics of the cultivar and environmental conditions. Breeding groups of early-maturing cultivars ripen in 65–80 days, mid-season cultivars in 74–88 days, mid-late cultivars in 79–93 days, and late-maturing cultivars in 80–103 days. Under the conditions of Western Siberia, optimal indicators for productivity include 36–40 days from emergence to panicle emergence and 54–62 days from panicle emergence to maturity.

This trait is highly dependent on meteorological conditions: with sufficient moisture supply, the periods lengthen, while drought often shortens the reproductive phase. To evaluate the vegetation period during variety testing, the dates of emergence, panicle emergence, and full maturity are recorded for 50% of the plants in a plot. Prolongation of the ripening phase in cool weather conditions contributes to increased protein accumulation in the grain.
