Avena nuda L.
The primary pathogens affecting naked oats are crown rust (Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae) and stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. avenae). The disease affects the vegetative organs of the plants, manifesting in the formation of uredinia and the subsequent development of telia.

Crown rust becomes noticeable primarily during the heading or grain-filling stages, affecting the leaves and leaf sheaths. Symptoms are characterized by the appearance of scattered, oval-shaped orange or yellow uredinia, which coalesce under conditions of heavy infection. After 7–10 days, shiny black telia form in their place or nearby.
The crown rust pathogen is highly variable, comprising approximately 150 races capable of rapidly overcoming race-specific resistance. In the breeding of naked oats, resistance genes of the Pc group—including Pc39, Pc68, Pc91, and Pc94, often derived from wild oat species—are employed to combat the pathogen, alongside quantitative trait loci responsible for horizontal resistance.
