The disease manifests through the loss of turgor in leaves, their interveinal necrosis, and spiral curling. Characteristic signs of strawberry infection also include reddening of petioles, the appearance of bluish streaks on them, growth stunting, dieback of runners, and premature plant death.
The pathogens persist in the soil in the form of microsclerotia for up to 25 years. Crop resistance to the pathogen is a quantitative trait controlled by the interaction of multiple genes, among which the loci FaRVd3D, FaRVd2B, and FaRVd6D are identified, as well as specific fungal strains such as II-1 and II-2.
