Fig mosaic disease

Ficus carica L.

A complex disease of fig trees caused by the Fig mosaic emaravirus in combination with a number of other pathogens. It manifests as characteristic leaf spotting, shoot deformation, and reduced yield.

The primary etiological agent of the disease is the Fig mosaic emaravirus (FMV), although the condition is often mixed due to the simultaneous presence of over 15 different viruses and viroids in the plant. Symptoms manifest as the appearance of yellow spots with blurred edges on the leaves, which may develop a rusty-brown border throughout the season. Deformations of the leaf blade, mottling, malformation of young shoots, reduction in fruit weight, and premature fruit drop are observed.

The severity of external symptoms depends on the cultivar and the composition of the viral complex, and symptoms may be latent or temporarily disappear. Genetically confirmed resistance genes to the pathogen in Ficus carica L. have not been described to date; only varying degrees of tolerance are observed in individual genotypes. The disease is spread via infected planting material, during grafting, and through the mite vector Aceria fici.
