Waxy bloom — soft wheat

Triticum aestivum L.

Waxy bloom is an important varietal morphological trait of soft wheat, the intensity of which is assessed on a nine-point scale. It performs a protective function and influences plant resistance to pathogens such as leaf rust.

In the reference 112 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.

To assess the waxy bloom in soft wheat, a visual method is used between the heading and flowering stages. Specialists analyze the intensity of the coating and the area of its distribution, primarily on the flag leaf sheaths, sub-spike internodes, and the surface of the spikes.

During variety testing, a scale is applied where values of 1 and 3 points correspond to weak bloom development, 5 points to moderate, and 7 and 9 points to strong and very strong. Due to the indicator's dependence on weather conditions, the use of reference varieties is mandatory for comparison.

The presence of a strong waxy bloom often correlates with increased resistance of a variety to leaf rust infection. This trait is considered a significant element of the phytometric characteristic, determining the specifics of the plant's interaction with the environment and pathogens.
