Uniformity — soft wheat

Triticum aestivum L.

An indicator of the homogeneity of a soft wheat grain batch by size, determined by sieve analysis as the percentage of the two largest fractions in the initial mass.

Uniformity is determined by sieving a grain sample through a set of control sieves with oblong apertures. The indicator is calculated as the ratio of the total mass of the two adjacent largest fractions to the mass of the initial sample, expressed as a percentage.

For certified soft wheat seeds, the optimal value is considered to be no less than 80%. Lower values indicate non-uniformity of the batch, which complicates precise sowing and leads to uneven plant development, as grains from different parts of the spikelet biologically have different sizes.

The use of uniform seeds is critically important for establishing a homogeneous agrophytocenosis and ensuring uniform emergence. In commercial production, high uniformity also optimizes grain processing regimes in the milling industry, reducing technological losses.
