Garden strawberry is a semi-evergreen plant capable of withstanding frosts down to -25...-35°C if provided with a snow cover 20–30 cm thick. The primary threat to the crop is damage to the roots, which begins at a soil temperature of -10°C, as well as the exposure of the growing point (crown), which rises above the soil surface with age, becoming vulnerable to desiccation and frost.
When organizing protection, priority is given to snow retention and the prevention of damping off. Using breathable non-woven materials with a density of 60 g/m² on a frame is preferable to direct contact between the material and the leaves, as this reduces the risk of ice crust formation and rot during thaws. An essential agrotechnical practice before covering is mulching the base of the plants with dry soil or organic matter to protect the root zone.
