To evaluate the winter hardiness of chrysanthemums, 3-point scales are used in domestic variety testing, 100-point systems in scientific research, and 1 to 9-point scales in international practice. Assessment objectivity is achieved by combining field observations with laboratory analysis of cell membrane stability during temperature interventions in the range of -8°C to -12°C.

High winter hardiness is characteristic primarily of Korean hybrids, which are capable of withstanding temperatures down to -15°C given adequate drainage. Conversely, Indian varieties and multiflora possess low winter hardiness and require lifting. The stability of the trait is limited by soil waterlogging, excessive nitrogen at the end of the season, and sharp temperature fluctuations during the winter-spring period.
