To evaluate the winter hardiness of Heuchera, laboratory freezing tests are used, where temperatures below -10...-12 °C often lead to a lack of tissue regeneration, as well as introduction scoring scales and USDA hardiness zones, which range from 3 to 9. Most modern cultivars are adapted to zones 4–9, however, hybrids involving thermophilic species exhibit lower resistance.

The winter hardiness of the crop is inextricably linked to agronomic practices: soil waterlogging provokes root rot, and freeze-thaw cycles cause rosette heaving, requiring mandatory mulching. As an evergreen plant, Heuchera is sensitive to physiological desiccation during early spring moisture evaporation; therefore, removing old foliage in autumn is not recommended.

Age-related changes also limit survival potential: after 4–5 years of growth, the rosette becomes severely exposed and falls apart, leading to a sharp decline in adaptive capacity. Regular rejuvenation and division of clumps are essential practices for maintaining a high level of winter hardiness.
