The plant reaches a height and width of about 0.5–0.6 m in 10 years, in some cases up to 1 m. Small obovate leathery leaves retain their coloration with a margin until autumn. Flowering with small yellow flowers occurs in May; decorative red fruits ripen in August–September.
The variety possesses frost hardiness of zone 5a (down to -30°C) and good resistance to unfavorable conditions. It prefers sunny sites for maximum intensity of leaf color and moderately moist soils with acidity from slightly acidic to neutral. It adapts well to urban conditions and is suitable for borders, rock gardens, and container gardening.
