Variety description

10 August 2026

Ostfriesische Palme is a traditional variety of Northern Germany, which historically bore the name Strunkkohl in the East Frisia region. The plant is classified as a multi-purpose variety: the lower leaves were historically used for livestock feed, and the upper ones for winter consumption.

The variety is late-maturing and is characterized by a significant stem height, reaching 1.80 meters. It possesses high frost resistance, which allows it to be left in the field during the winter period. The quality of the leaves improves after exposure to temperatures below 7°C, when their sugar content increases.

The plant is purely a food crop, despite its aesthetic appearance. It served as a genetic basis for the creation of other varieties, such as Rote Palme. There is no official data on resistance to specific diseases within the framework of modern breeding for this variety.
