The variety Nero di Toscana tardivo belongs to the kale group and is a traditional Italian plant. It is distinguished by an upright habit and reaches a height of 60–90 cm, resembling a small palm tree in shape.

The leaves of the variety have a long, narrow shape, a characteristic blistered texture, and an intense dark green, almost black color. Due to its appearance, the leaf surface is often compared to reptile skin.

The plant is late-maturing and possesses high cold resistance, withstanding temperatures down to -15°C...-18°C. Under the influence of frost, the flavor qualities of the leaves improve due to the accumulation of sugars.
