The Banya de Cabra variety, the name of which translates from Catalan as "goat horn," is a local Spanish variety common in Catalonia and Valencia. It is not a product of directed breeding, but was formed as a result of centuries of cultivation.
The fruits of the variety are characterized by a curved pod shape, with an average weight of about 15.3 g. The variety is distinguished by a relatively high seed content in the fruits (about 15.2%) with a low quantity of seeds per pod. The plant is adapted to the Mediterranean climate and is drought-tolerant.
The main purpose of the fruit is the industrial production of locust bean gum from the seed endosperm, as well as the use of the pod pulp as animal feed or as a food additive in the form of flour.
