The De la Mel variety is a local indigenous cultivar preserved in germplasm banks. The plant is characterized as rustic, possessing high drought tolerance and the ability to grow in poor soils.

The fruits of the variety have specific physicochemical indicators of sugar content and acidity. The variety is distinguished by a high rooting capacity when propagated by cuttings, reaching 85 percent. The main economic use is directed at obtaining locust bean gum and the application of the pulp in the food and feed industries.
