The variety forms compact round or oval heads with fleshy leaves of a dark crimson color and contrasting white veins. Head weight varies from 200 to 800 g depending on growing conditions.
The plant is mid-season or late-ripening; harvesting usually falls in the autumn-winter period. The variety possesses high resistance to cold. The taste is characterized as bitter and piquant, acquiring sweetish notes after exposure to the first frosts.
Used as a salad crop: the leaves are consumed fresh, fried, or stewed. It is also possible to force leaves from roots in the dark to obtain more tender produce.
